This weekend I have had so much fun plating with orbeez (these super absorbent polymers were invented back in the ’60s to irrigate crops during droughts).
With the addition of water, they can grow to more than 100 times
their volume.
their volume.
Basically, they start life as hard plastic balls that are then placed into water.
This is when the magic happens within a few minutes you can see them absorbing the water and getting bigger.
I’m not going to lie these things are super fun and everyone needs to have a play!!!!!!!
But how do they relate to the project?
Well the logic behind this experiment.
Once the beads are saturated mix them into the concrete as a replacement for the course aggregate.
They will add moisture pockets throughout the whole concrete and create an open celled structure.
The open cell structure will allow roots through the concrete and the moisture pockets will sustain life.
They will keep moisture in the concrete and will absorb new moisture when it rains.
I will keep you updated whether this is the case (finger crossed this could be the answer to all my concrete conundrums)
