Sunday 20th May 2018

Sorry for my lack of posting last week I was in Dublin, on a training course for entrepenerial stuff will upload the video I made at some point this week, this time its only 1 minute.

I also worked on a concrete competition and a paper which I will upload too.

So today I did some more experimental prep work and made dissolvable elements.

I have had the stuff to make this for a while but have been putting off doing it as I'm not sure how well it will work but on this not so sunny afternoon in Belfast I thought I would have a play.

First I started With the edible water bottles or spherification ....

what was needed

-1 g of Sodium alginate (a natural substance derived from brown seaweed)
– 5 g of calcium lactate (a type of salt that can be found commonly in cheese and gum)
– A bowl filled with 1 cup of drinking water
– Another bowl filled with 4 cups of water
– Another bowl filled with water for rinsing off the “bottles”
– An immersion blender (you could also use a regular blender)
– A deep spoon like a measuring spoon

and you get something like this .........they feel so weird and super squishy a must do for anyone....

Here are a few more images of the process the object was to make them as small as possible so as to have minimal impact on the concrete and dissolve to create an open celled structure.

Sodium Alginate being dissolved and left for 15 minutes.

A selection of spheres formed.

The first selection was done with normal tap water; the next fertiliser was added and captured into the spheres.

The next experiment involved making a carrageenan jelly which will then be crushed into smaller pieces and then dissolved when the concrete is set.

The next experiment looks a blending SAP but the balls were activated using water containing fertiliser which seem to be absorbed, I need to test this further to make sure the nutrients  are absorbed as this could be an interesting nutrients delivery method.
