The new extension to Tate St Ives opened in October 2017. The 1320msq addition extends the original building to include a large contemporary gallery, education spaces, transition spaces and offices.
When in Cornwall the Tate is just something that has to be done, I have a deep held love for St Ives but anyone who has ever been will understand, its just one of the beautiful places.
This is the view from where we parked (ahhh look at the sea.....)
This is the entrance to the tate for anyone that hasn't been and it really is a journey to the center/entrance but it is a great bit of deco architecture.
So this is the view that sells the tate for me, I haven't been to any gallery that has this kind of picture perfect view, it even looks good in the rain.
So lets get to the extension that was designed by Jamie Forbes architects.
It has a concrete core and floor and the way it directs the light is beautiful.
I'm not sure why the gap is here I would have liked it filled with some kind of metal (imagine brass ………….mmmmmm)
I really enjoyed this concrete cavern but I hated the lights, I feel the ruined the clean lines and trueness to materials.
This is poorly poured concrete look at the blow holes....
I do love this light oak arch they had doors to match that were equally spectacular....
Look at the tiles- I thought it was copper but hand glazed tiles- I can add no more I think they are beautiful...
Overall thoughts I liked the space created and the trueness to materials but would like the lights changed, thanks Jamie!!!
And this is where we ate cake and drank tea ……...
The sand is almost too perfect
When you leave somewhere with sandy toes you know its been a good day.
P.s of course I went in the sea but OMG it was cold ….. but so blue and alluring.
