This week has been all about fabrics and growth.
Can we join the both to make concrete that can grow ?
Logic:
The logic behind these experiments is based on an assumptions about seeds and growth.
The moisture and heat genereated by the exothermic reaction from the concrete should create the ideal environment for germination by creating heat and moisture.
The seeds will be attached to a variety of fabrics using organic glues to attach the seeds. This line of inquiriy will base it’s self upon research done by Tactility factory and ideas developed by them for the crystal infused concrete.
This will involve the seeds being stuck to the fabric and then infused into the concrete with a specifically designed face mix.
Why the chosen fabrics ?
Hessian:
Hessian was chosen for its large point size and thickness of thread.
It is hoped that this fabric will provide a thick structure for the seeds as well as being resistant to the concrete.
Cotton:
Cotton was chosen as its widely avaliable and in contarst to hessian it has a delicated thread thickeness but still has a large point size.
It is hoped that this fabric will sit smootly under the surface of the concrete whilist still acting as a surface for the seeds.
Cross stitch fabric:
This fabric was chosen for it stiffness and grided appreance.
It is hoped this uniformity will allow for a uniformed pour on the fabric and placement of seeds.
Fish net fabric:
This fabric was chosen for its openess and flexibility.
It is hoped that this fabric would be suited for allowing patterns on the surfaces as well as being adaptive to 3d surfaces.
